General

 The Republic of Serbia. It contains two autonomous provinces: Vojvodina and Kosovo-Metohija. Area: 88,361 km² . Climate: Temperate continental climate, with a gradual transition between the four seasons of the year .Population: 7,498.001 (the latest 2002. census, excluding Kosovo-Metohija). Language: The official language is Serbian and the script in official use is Cyrillic, while Latin script is also used. In the areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, the languages and scripts of the minorities are in official use, as provided by law. Capital: Belgrade (Beograd), with a population of 1,6 millions, is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of Serbia. Religion: The main religion in Serbia is Christian Ortodox. There are also other religious communities in Serbia: Islamic, Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and other. Government: Democratic republic. The president and the parliament are elected every four years in general elections. Current president of Serbia is Boris Tadic. Time: GMT + 1

History: After a struggle for the throne with his brothers, Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the Nemanjic dynasty, rose to power in 1170 and started renewing the Serbian state in the Raska region. Sometimes with the sponsorship of Byzantium, and sometimes opposing it, the veliki zupan (a title equivalent to the rank of prince) Stefan Nemanja expanded his state seizing territories east and south, and newly annexed the littoral and the Zeta region. Along with his governmental efforts, the veliki zupan dedicated much care to the construction of monasteries. Nemanjic Dinasty rule till the second part of 14th century. The last rulers been Tzar Urosh. After this Medieval period came Turkish period from the end of 14th till the end of 19th century. After Turkish period Serbia become an indipendent state, Kingdom with Obrenovic dinasty and Karadjordjevic Dinasty on the throne. After First World War, Serbia become a part of new Kingdom called Kingdom of Serbs, Croat and Slovenian – from 1929. Kingdom Yougoslavia. After the Second World War Kingdom of Yougoslavia become a comunist state with dictator Josip Broz Tito on the head. During the 1991 and 1992 former Yugoslav Republics, Macedonia, Bosnia, Slovenia and Croatia had independence and Serbia with Montenegro contain as Federal Republic Yugoslavia till the 2006. when Montenegro declare independence and Serbia become finally independent also!
