BELGRADE

Belgrade St Sava TempleBelgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 1.6 million. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe.

Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, Belgrade has for centuries been home to many nationalities, with Serbs of the Orthodox Christian religion making up the majority of the population (90%). The official language is Serbian, while visitors from abroad can use English to communicate.
"The sky above Belgrade is wide and high, unstable but always beautiful; even during winter serenities with their icy splendour; even during summer storms when the whole of it turns into a single gloomy cloud which, driven by the mad wind, carries the rain mixed with the dust of panonian plain; even in spring when it seems that it also blooms, along with the ground; even in autumn when it grows heavy with the autumn stars in swarms. Always beautiful and rich, as a compensation to this strange town for everything that isn't there, and a consolation because of everything that shouldn't be there.
But the greatest splendour of that sky above Belgrade, that are the sunsets. In autumn and in summer, they are broad and bright like desert mirages, and in winter they are smothered by murky clouds and dark red hazes. And in every time of year frequently come the days when the flame of that sun setting in the plain, between the rivers beneath Belgrade, gets reflected way up in the high celestial dome, and it breaks there and pours down over the scattered town. Then, for a moment, the reddish tint of the sun paints even the remotest corners of Belgrade and reflects into the windows, even of those houses it otherwise poorly illuminates."
Written about Belgrade by: Ivo Andrić, Serbian Nobel prize laureate

NOVI SAD

Novi Sad ChatedralNovi Sad is the main administrative centreof the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. The city lies in the southern part of Central Europe's Pannonian Plain, on both banks of the Danube river.

Novi Sad is Serbia's second largest city, after Belgrade. According to the data from November 2009, the city had an urban population of 283,634, while its municipal population was 370,101. The city is located on the border of the Bačka and Srem regions, on the banks of the Danube river and Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal, while facing the northern slopes of Fruška Gora mountain.
Since it was founded in 1694, Novi Sad became the centre of Serbian culture and earned its nickname Serbian Athens. Today, Novi Sad is a large industrial and Financial Centre of the Serbian economy; and it is also one of the biggest construction sites in the region.
The name Novi Sad means "New Plantation"  in Serbian. It is a translation of the Latin word "Neoplanta," which was given by Austrian Empress Maria Teresia .
In the 19th century, the city was the capital of Serbian culture, earning the nickname Serbian Athens. In that time, almost every Serbian novelist, poet, jurist, and publicist at the end of 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century had lived or worked in Novi Sad some time of his or her career. Among others, these cultural workers include Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, Mika Antić, Đura Jakšić, etc. Matica srpska, the oldest cultural-scientific institution of Serbia, was moved from Budapest to Novi Sad in 1864, while Serbian National Theatre, the oldest professional theatre among the South Slavs, was founded in Novi Sad in 1861.
Today, Novi Sad is the second cultural centre in Serbia (besides Belgrade) and city's officials try to make the city more attractive to numerous cultural events and music concerts. Since 2000, Novi Sad is home to the EXIT festival, the biggest music summer festival in Serbia and the region; and also the only festival of alternative and new theatre in Serbia - INFANT, most prominent festival of children literature - Zmaj Children Games, International Novi Sad Literature Festival, Sterijino pozorje, Novi Sad Jazz Festival, and many others...
Novi Sad as Vojvodina’s capital city is the seat of good food and fantastic vine region. Beautiful city centre with tipical Austria-Hungarian architectural buildings and palaces, astonish ambient, romantic parks and Danube shore, magnificent Petrovaradin Fortress...

SUBOTICA

Subotica City HallSubotica  is a city and municipality in northern Serbia, in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. It is located at 46.07° North, 19.68° East, about 10 km from the border with Hungary.

Once the second largest city in Serbia (1919), contemporary Subotica is the second largest city of the Vojvodina region following Novi Sad. Among the most multiethnic cities in Serbia with a relative Hungarian majority, the city's population numbers 99,981 (according to the 2002 census). Likewise, today it is Serbia's fifth largest city, with the municipality of Subotica numbering 148,401 people. It is the administrative centre of the North Bačka District.
Unique in Serbia, Subotica has the most buildings built in art nouveau style. Especially the City Hall (built in 1908-1910) and the Synagogue (1902) are of outstanding beauty. These were built by the same architects, by Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab from Budapest, Hungary. Another exceptional example of art nouveau architecture is the actual Artistic Encounter building, which was built in 1904 by Ferenc J. Raichle.
The most remarkable church buildings are: the Catholic Cathedral of St. Theresa of Avila from 1797, the Franciscan Monastery from 1723, the Orthodox churches also from the 18th century, the Hungarian Art Nouveau Subotica Synagogue from the turn-of-the-century.
In recent years there has been an effort to restore the synagogue. Over $400,000 has been raised for the cause by 2004.
The Palić lake is a lake situated 8 km from Subotica, near the town of Palić, in Serbia. It covers an area of 3.8 km². The average depth of the lake is 2 m.
The origin of the lake remains hidden deep in the past. It is known to have dried up on several occasions, always being refilled. A park was established in 1840 when it was discovered that the lake water and mud on the waste land where winds went wild and the sun beat down on all things living had salubrious properties. The health spa's natural environment was fostered. The Great Park has since been redesigned and additional greenery planted, originally occupying an area of more than 86,000 square meters, today taking up about 190,000 m².
The Palić Lake is considered a protected area and a Park of Nature. The entire coast of the Lake is well arranged and it is some 17 km long. The coast is very attractive for its walking paths, bicycle riding or coach driving paths. The mineral water springs have a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, and the mud of the lake is rich in important mineral substances with curative characteristics. Palić Lake is a spa resort.
Palić lake is the most popular tourist destination in Vojvodina, and the fifth most popular in Serbia. It offers various pleasures to the visitors, which are coming every year in greater number. Palić is ideal place for young people, as well as for older tourists.
